There Will Always Be an England
9th January 2011
It was 1993 when Sue Macartney-Snape and Victoria Mather made their
debut in the Telegraph Magazine. Since then there have been over 900
Social Stereotypes.
This is a brilliant new collection of stereotypes from the long running
"Daily Telegraph" series. In this hilariously mordant, yet touchingly
sympathetic, book, no aspect of English life is spared. Victoria Mather
and Sue Macartney-Snape return in sparkling form to immortalize those
very English characters and situations we come across every day. For all
of us, there'll always be an England, and, we're afraid, this is it...

The Brits and their Gardens – a Match Made in Illustrative Heaven
24th July 2010
Sue Macartney–Snape is the award winning artist and illustrator of the ‘Social Stereotypes’ column in the Saturday Telegraph. This summer, she depicts the eccentric English and their much-loved gardens in four comical illustrations.
There is a long standing relationship between the British and their gardens. Fussed over, pruned and polished squares of landscaping are dedicated to relaxation and the quest to best one’s neighbour. Macartney–Snape’s astute observations of this very British tradition are to be found in four of her best illustrations.
‘The Happy Man’ and ‘The Happy Couple’ remark on our gardens as an extension of our home – lounging in the sun, enjoying a glass of fizz and reading the papers. In true Macartney-Snape style, ‘The Happy Man’ is not only happy because of his garden haven, but also his butler and maid who dote upon his every need!
‘Defoliating’ demonstrates our intrinsic need, as Brits, to prune our beloved plants to within an inch of their lives, while ‘Collecting Cuttings’ shows us revelling in the fruits of our labour by sharing with friends our best and most luscious flowers.
Sue Macartney-Snape has been the Saturday Telegraph Magazine’s illustrator for over 15 years, and has a reputation as the finest in her field. With her prints selling worldwide, she is a household name, and has been widely acclaimed as ‘the Wodehouse of art’ and ‘a master of caricature.’ (John Julius Norwich)

The UK’s most Popular Illustrator celebrates the Henley Royal Regatta
29th June 2010
Sue Macartney–Snape, award winning artist and illustrator of the ‘Social Stereotypes’ column in the Saturday Telegraph, pays homage to one of the UK’s most loved sporting events in a magnificent illustration of Henley Royal Regatta.
Macartney-Snape has been the Saturday Telegraph Magazine’s illustrator for over 15 years, and has a reputation as the finest in her field. With her prints selling worldwide, she is a household name, and has been widely acclaimed as ‘the Wodehouse of art’ and ‘a master of caricature.’ (John Julius Norwich)
Her depiction of Henley, exquisite in its detail, demonstrates Macartney-Snape’s unequivocal talent. Awash with amusing and charming characters, fans of Henley are sure to recognise themselves and their contemporaries among the throngs of dapper gentlemen, English roses and rowing heroes.
The illustration was published in the Saturday Telegraph Magazine this weekend, on the 26th of June, in celebration of the start of Henley Royal Regatta on Wednesday the 30th of June. |

English Eccentricities 1st March 2010
A brand new collection of 20 Social Stereotype prints featuring 2 Deluxe prints, hand-embellished by Sue.
It is with a keen eye and a quick wit that Sue Macartney-Snape makes her very English observations. The subtle removal of a small bound drawing book from her bag or pocket would be a signal to the astute passer by. Its withdrawal indicates that she may have noticed an unusual expression, or an amusing vignette - and is about to record it with well-pointed precision.
Those glaringly obvious foibles which we and our contemporaries try to hide are presented by Sue in typically characteristic humour. She hones in on that which makes our country the uniquely quirky place it is. Rushing about our day to day lives, we may notice the happy-go-lucky lady cyclist, dog in basket, off to the church luncheon. Indeed, we may come home to a dear husband or wife, snoring gently in their favourite chair, cat on lap and dogs sprawled around feet. Sue reopens our eyes to these sights and allows us to rediscover the quintessential comedy to be found on our very doorstep.
It is Sue’s particular gift that she is able to gently tease us with her observations, lending her very able hands to reveal the hideous gloriousness of our English Eccentricities. |
